The band journeyed north to El Dorado County a few weeks ago to play the home of Bob & Penny Hines. They had a weekend long soiree with music from Freebo, The Musers, and us, with lots of jam circles in between. It was a really special event, and Bob filmed the whole thing! Here are some selections from the show, and if you’re really into it, here’s a link to view the whole darn thing.
One of the best parts about playing a house concert is getting to tell the stories behind the songs….here’s me rambling about netelia wasps before playing “Wasps”
This is the first time we’ve recorded “Grindstone,” from The Optimist. It’s a little freewheeling, as we are still figuring out what it looks like as a live song, but it was a lot of fun to play.
The arrangement of “Willie Nelson” has changed so much since I first wrote it, but at the end of the day it’s a song about change, so I’m quite happy to keep mixing it up.
“When You Come Near” has been a staple of shows since 2009, and hearing this band play it is really exciting. Everyone gets a solo and I just get to watch in awe.
And, last but not least, “Moonshine”. Don’t ask me how I’m still not tired of playing this song, but I think it has something to do with how great the guys sound playing it with me.
